Radiation Guide

The invisible killer

Radiation zones are some of the most dangerous areas on the map. You can't see radiation, and by the time you feel its effects, you may already be in serious trouble. This guide covers how contamination works, what gear protects you, and how to treat radiation poisoning.

How Radiation Works

Radiation zones spread out over a radius. The closer you are to the center, the higher the radiation level. Here's what happens when you enter one:

Step 1Radiation accumulates in your body as a "rad-buffer" while you're in the zone or touching contaminated items.
Step 2The rad-buffer gradually causes radiation poisoning, which develops as radiation accumulates in your system.
Step 3Everything you carry gets contaminated too — your clothes, items, even vehicles. Contaminated items continue to irradiate you even after you leave the zone.
You don't die directly from radiation. Instead, severe radiation causes radiation poisoning, which causes bleeding, weakened immunity, health loss, and exhaustion. Mild exposure weakens your body and makes you vulnerable to other ailments.

Radiation Treatment

Radiation poisoning requires specific anti-radiation medications. Early symptoms include weakness, nausea, and dizziness. In later stages you'll experience bleeding, severe health loss, and body exhaustion. Get treated early.

Tip: Potassium Iodide has the lowest overdose value (0.2) among radiation treatments. If your exposure is mild, start with that. Save the heavy stuff for serious poisoning.

Protective Gear

To safely enter a radiation zone, you need a full protective suit. On the edges where exposure is weak, a gas mask alone may suffice. Deeper in, you need everything. Each body slot has a different weight toward your overall protection:

Protection Weight by Body Part

Body PartSlotWeightImpact
FaceGas Mask2.541.7% — the most important piece
TorsoNBC Jacket1.016.7%
LegsNBC Pants1.016.7%
FeetNBC Boots0.58.3%
HandsNBC Gloves0.58.3%
HeadNBC Hood0.58.3%
The gas mask accounts for nearly half your protection. Without it, even with every other piece of NBC gear equipped, your effective protection drops to roughly 46%. Never enter a hot zone without a mask.

Dosimeters

Dosimeters measure radiation levels around you, on contaminated items, and on your character. Different dosimeters have different ranges and detection radii. A long-range dosimeter lets you detect zones before walking into them.

DosimeterMax ReadingDetection RadiusBest For
DBG-05 (Household)999 mR/h1.5mChecking items up close
Pripyat999 mR/h3mPrecise readings in low-rad areas
MKC-01A9,999 mR/h5mGeneral-purpose zone detection
CDV 7005,000 mR/h10mEarly warning at distance
Tip: Carry a CDV 700 for early detection (10m radius) and a Pripyat for precise readings when you need accuracy. The CDV 700 will warn you before you walk into a hot zone.

Decontamination

After leaving a radiation zone, your gear and clothing are contaminated. They will continue to irradiate you until cleaned. You can decontaminate items using:

  • A large amount of clean water
  • Soapy solution
  • Special chemical agents
Don't forget your gear. Leaving the zone doesn't mean you're safe. Check your items with a dosimeter and decontaminate everything before it poisons you slowly.

Protective Containers

Protective containers prevent radiation from contaminating items stored inside them. Essential for carrying valuable loot through radiation zones.

Tip: Store your most valuable items (medicine, ammo, food) in a protective container before entering a radiation zone. Everything outside will need decontamination afterward.
